A Carrier furnace error code 178 indicates a problem with the air supply. This error will usually happen when there is a problem with the blower motor that is responsible for changing the temperature of the air coming out of it.
Carrier furnace error code 178 is a problem communication between the control board and the gas control assembly. This means that the gas valve is not opening or closing when it should. The error codes 178 will be displayed on the diagnostic screen for a time of about 10 seconds and then disappear to tell you that there is an issue.

If it does, then the furnace shuts off and will not restart until someone manually adjusts the flame or replaces it.
